1) According to Pottermore, JK Rowling based the character of Hagrid on a real-life biker that she met. This biker was a massive and scary man but would also talk about his love of gardening.

2) According to JK Rowling, Hagrid was one of the characters that she created on her very first day of conceptualizing the series.

3) Hagrid’s name comes from the old English word, which means you had a rough night.

4) JK Rowling revealed on Twitter that Hagrid was not able to cast a Patronus charm due to the difficulty of the spell.

5) JK Rowling also revealed that she always planned for Hagrid to be the one to carry Harry’s body out of the Forbidden Forest in the Deathly Hallows. This is because Hagrid carried Harry as a baby and it mirrored that scene.

6) JK Rowling revealed in an interview that Hagrid and Voldemort were both in their 60’s during the time that Harry was at Hogwarts.

7) The casting director for the Harry Potter series revealed in an interview that Robin Williams wanted to play the role of Hagrid. Director Chris Columbus was forced to turn down Williams because the cast had to be all British and Irish.

8) It has been reported that while Columbus wanted Williams, Robbie Coltrane was always JK Rowling’s first choice to play the character. Rowling ended up getting her wish and Coltrane has been praised for his portrayal of the character.

9) Former Rugby player, Martin Bayfield, served as the stunt double for the role of Hagrid in the films. Bayfield spent several years on the English National Team and stands at 6 foot 10. Bayfield also played the role of the young version of Hagrid in the brief scene in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.
