Harry Potter
Liam Aiken was rumored for the role of Harry Potter but he didn’t end up getting cast. Liam is probably best known for playing the role of Klaus in Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, which came out in 2004.
Tom Felton auditioned for the roles of Harry and Ron but he didn’t get either part. He was cast as Draco Malfoy instead.
Hagrid
Robin Williams really wanted to play the role of Hagrid. This was due to the rule of them only casting British actors.
Molly Weasley
According to reports, Rosie O’Donnell wanted to play the role of Molly Weasley. She was also turned down for the same British rule as Robin Williams.
Severus Snape
The role of Severus Snape was originally offered to Tim Roth but he turned it down. Alan Rickman was the first choice of J.K Rowling and he subsequently was cast after Roth turned it down.
Tom Riddle
Eddie Redmayne auditioned to play the role of Tom Riddle in Chamber of Secrets. He didn’t get the role but was cast as Newt Scamander many years later.
Jamie Campbell Bower auditioned to play the role of Tom Riddle in Half-Blood Prince. He didn’t get the part but was later cast as young Gellert Grindelwald in Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
Bellatrix Lestrange/ Narcissa Malfoy
Helen McCrory was originally cast as Bellatrix Lestrange but she got pregnant and had to pass on the role. This role was then given to Helena Bonham Carter. Later, McCrory was cast as Narcissa Malfoy.
There were reports going around that Naomi Watts was going to play the role of Narcissa Malfoy in Half-Blood Prince. This never ended up coming to fruition and the role went to Helen McCrory.
Albus Dumbledore
After the passing of Richard Harris in 2002, Ian McKellen was offered the role of Albus Dumbledore. McKellen turned down the role because Harris had made a comment about his acting abilities before he passed. McKellen didn’t think it was right for him to take over a part where the previous actor didn’t approve of him. For those who don’t know, he played Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings franchise and also played Magneto in X-Men.
Lily Potter
J.K Rowling was asked to play the role of Lily Potter in the movies but she turned it down. This was because Rowling didn’t think that she was a good actress and she was worried that she would mess up the role.
Gilderoy Lockhart
Reports suggest that Hugh Grant turned down the role of Professor Lockhart in the second movie. This subsequently led to Kenneth Branagh getting cast.
