Moody is killed during the ‘Battle of the Seven Potters’. This was where several members of the Order of the Phoenix disguised themselves as Harry Potter in order to trick Lord Voldemort.
Moody was hit by the killing curse from Voldemort, who assumed that Harry would be protected by one of the more skilled members of the Order.
