Harry Potter Pet Quiz: Which Would You Take To Hogwarts?

In Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone, it is established that students are able to bring one pet with them to Hogwarts. Harry’s Hogwarts letter says that “Students may bring an owl or a cat or a toad”. We have put together a Harry Potter pet quiz, which will let you know which of the pets that you would bring with you. All you have to do is answer the questions about yourself and we will let you know the pet that you would bring. We have included owls, cats, and toads as outlined in Harry’s letter from Hogwarts. We have also included rats as ‘Scabbers’ played a big role in the series as well.

List Of All The Harry Potter Pets That Students Could Bring With Them

Here are some more details on the various options that you could have gotten on our quiz. We have also provided some of the pet names from the Harry Potter series and more.

Owls

Owls are one of the most popular pets in the entire series. Fans were introduced to Owls early on in the series after Harry received ‘Hedwig’ as a gift from Hagrid on his 11th birthday. Owls are not just used as pets though, we see them deliver letters and parcels throughout the series as well.

There are multiple types of owls revealed throughout the books. This includes Snowy, Screech, Barn, and Tawny.

Known Owls From The Series

• Hedwig was the pet of Harry Potter for most of his time at Hogwarts. The snowy owl remained a loyal companion to Harry until she died during the ‘Battle of the Seven Potters’.
• Errol was an old, great gray owl that was owned by the Weasley Family and had bad eyesight. Errol was shown in the Chamber of Secrets movie, where he bumped into the kitchen window at The Burrow.
• Hermes was a screech owl that was the pet of Percy Weasley. Percy received Hermes as a gift from his father after being named a Gryffindor prefect.
• Pigwidgeon was a scops owl that was the pet of Ron Weasley. Ron received Pigwidgeon as a gift from Sirius Black.

Cats

Another popular pet throughout the series is Cats. We see them used as pets and also as an Animagus form.

There are various different types of cats shown during the series. This includes Tabby, Persian, Siamese, and more.

Known Cats From The Series

• Crookshanks was a ginger, half-Kneazle cat that was the pet of Hermione Granger during her time at Hogwarts.
• Mrs. Norris was the pet cat of Hogwarts caretaker Argus Filch. After the Chamber of Secrets was reopened, Mrs. Norris was petrified by the basilisk.
• Professor McGonagall’s Animagus form was a Tabby Cat and so was her Patronus Charm.
• Dolores Umbridge’s Patronus also took the form of a Persian cat.

Toads

A not-so-popular pet option for Students at Hogwarts are Toads. Compared to Owls and Cats, Toads are by far the least popular pet among Hogwarts students (out of the three main ones). It was viewed as embarrassing if you had a toad as your pet instead of the other, more popular choices.

There are multiple types of toads that were shown in the series. This includes, Briar, Dragon, and Western Green.

Known Toads From The Series

• Trevor was the pet Toad of Neville Longbottom. During his first year at Hogwarts, Neville constantly lost Trevor.
• Ron Weasley had a Toad that he kept at the Weasley home in the Burrow. No name was ever revealed for it.

Rats

Another not-so-popular pet option for Students at Hogwarts was Rats. They weren’t mentioned as being allowed in Harry’s Hogwarts letter but we have to include them because of ‘Scabbers’. Ron had a pet rat while at Hogwarts, so we assume that they were also allowed as a pet.

There are multiple types of Rats that were shown in the series. This includes: Albino, Black, Grey, and Brown.

Known Rats From The Series

• Scabbers was the pet of Ron Weasley and played a big role in the series. The pet turned out to actually be the Animagus form of Peter Pettigrew. “Scabbers” was first owned by Ron’s brother, Percy Weasley.

Are Dogs Allowed At Hogwarts?

Even though the series features several dogs, students at Hogwarts were not permitted to bring dogs as their pets. Harry’s Hogwarts letter specifically mentioned Owls, Cats, and Toads as being allowed but not dogs.

Which Pets Are Banned From Hogwarts?

A safe assumption is that anything considered to be dangerous was not allowed as a pet for students. Another safe assumption is that spiders were not allowed as Hagrid had to hide Aragog when he was a student.

Which Pets Were Allowed At Durmstrang, Beauxbatons or Ilvermorny?

From my research, I haven’t found out if students who attend Durmstrang, Beauxbatons, or Ilvermorny can bring pets with them. I don’t believe that J.K Rowling has ever revealed this but I would love to find out. I will update this section if I end up finding out any more details on the topic. It would make sense though if students from Hogwarts are allowed.
