Harry and his classmates were introduced to it during their first Charms class and it became a staple throughout the rest of the books/ movies. Ron Weasley was the one who used the spell on the troll in the girls bathroom. After struggling with learning the spell, he was finally able to cast it properly to save his friends.

The answer is Swish and Flick. This was taught by Professor Flitwick during Charms class.
